Dairy production systems (DPS) are critical for providing high-quality protein, but most dairy systems rely heavily on external inputs, limiting their circularity. DairyMix aims to develop multi-criteria assessment, decision support, modelling, and management tools for sustainable circular mixed farming systems for dairy production. DairyMix will collect and analyze data from case studies and from existing databases. This data analysis will assess the potential of known mitigation measures and precision farming technologies. The ICT-based tool OTICE (i.e., Online Tool for monitoring Indoor barn Climate, animal stress and Emission levels of air pollutants) will be further developed, aiming to facilitate on-farm decisions with respect to barn climate, emission reduction, and animal welfare. A multi-criteria assessment framework for mixed farming systems for dairy production will be delivered, basing on indicators for circularity and resource use. Finally, an interactive web application (i.e. DairyMix Platform) will be released. The online platform will allow to evaluate the effects of changes in farming practice, targeting farmers and other stakeholders while promoting environmental, economic, and societal sustainability and nutrient circularity.
DairyMix will bring the following innovation:
